Textiles in Sumbawa

Ptolemy, textile goddess, who joined us on the 10 day charter from Gili Trawangan to Labuan Bajo, took a taster in traditional weaving techniques in the village of Wera on Sumbawa.

Ptolemy works in textile design and production in the UK and was really interested in the traditional weaving techniques. The ladies of the village were more than happy to share their skills and Ptolemy took to the activity with gusto, much to the enjoyment of the crowds that
gathered.

Sarongs take around 7 days in total to complete. They are sold locally within the village and taken also to the nearby smaller towns and villages. The product is also very popular with tourists who infrequently visit the village that is also well known for its boat building.

Sumbawa is one of the lesser visited Indonesian islands, although one of the biggest in Nusa Tengarra. Travel infrastructure makes it much harder to get from place to place, but the rewards are great. Isolated beaches, incredible friendly and unspoilt traditional villages make for a genuine experience in Indonesian way of life. If, like us, you decide to make a beach BBQ for dinner, you certainly won’t have a shortage of assistant chefs happy to show you the best way to grill a fish.

Wicked Diving offers Expeditions throughout Indonesia. These are all done in small groups and bring more to the trips than just simply diving. We try to make a positive impact on the communities we visit through activities like those mentioned above. In addition 2% of all our revenue goes towards projects that improve the lives of the communities we operate in.
