The best bar in Khao Lak - the Happy Snapper

Last night was the opening of the best bar in Khao Lak, but also the beginning of our season. The first charter flights are now arriving, the streets are starting to see more and more people and we are diving!

They did a few minor changes, and it gives the band more room to play and adds a nice ambiance.

We have been friends with the Happy Snapper family for many years. But they gave us the highest honor ever - there is now a drink named after us! And since it can be loud we even have our own hand signal!!! No other dive shop has been thus honored.

so when you visit, beware - we might jsut take you Happy Snapper and get WICKED!!!!

Khao Lak Divng - Our DM Challenge

The day finally arrived when 3 of our Wicked dive master trainees entered the big wide world of diving professionals and have become divemasters! Here they are shown with their mentor Marcel and other divemasters Becky and Robyn.

Throughout the divemaster course the girls had a lot of help from all our instructors and staff but they get allocated a mentor specifically to them who helps them throughout the course. Marcel was the lucky one to be responsible for their development and has helped the girls in many ways from the theory side of the course to building up their experience and confidence practically in the water. Now the girls are all set and ready to work... anyone have any offers? To complete the last part of their training the last thing to do was a dive master challenge. The location for this spectacular event was The Happy Snapper, Khao Lak.

Step ONE...

Challenge number 1

To guide a dive and find animals of interest, whilst staying together as a group.

Dive Site : Happy Snapper
Dive Time : 5 Minutes
Marine Life : Turtle
Shark
Whaleshark

To put their team-working skills to maximum use the girls were all joined together (the use of tape was handy here) , and Beyla and Mel were given a mask which they could not see out of at all (because they were covered completely in tape) However Anna was able to see out of her mask meaning that her fellow dive master trainees were going to have to trust her completely... This was of course carried out whilst drinking a potent cocktail of alcohol from a bucket.

As things do at DM Challenges, things may not go quite as planned, and ended up with Keith rescuing them from planting their heads into the bar! After a lot of time spent on the floor, maybe they still need to practice some of their team skills!

Challenge number 2

Exam time...

As all the girls hated the exams we decided to make them answer exam questions in front of the whole bar. You can see the worried expression on there faces as they have to deal with the pressure of it all, luckily the questions weren't too hard and there was no pass or fail...otherwise who knows what the result would have been.

Challenge number 3

The songbird...

Whilst not part of the divemaster course Beyla, has been earning a reputation for her brilliant voice in the Happy Snapper on open mic night, and what better way to finish her divemaster training than a song with backup from her 2 fellow divemasters?

The celebration carried on and at some point Marcel foolishly got out the permanent marker pen. Combined with just a little alcohol consumption... people were drawing on each others t-shirts and all over their bodies. The girls had many messages wishing them good luck amongst other things, although I think Beyla was a little disappointed to find that her message from Marcel had been written on all the girls t -shirts.

A lot of people woke up with blue stained sheets or in the case of Marcel, arrived at the wicked office to be greeted by a lot of laughter from a bunch of our guests, it took him a while to realise that he had forgotten to clean the attractive moustache that had been painted on his face the night before.

So we just want to say from everyone here at Wicked Diving thank you Beyla, Mel, and Anna for all the good fun over the last months and good-luck with everything in the future!

Happy Snapper

It's not easy to see, because I go in only at night, but the Happy Snapper got a nice addition this year and it looks great. better than great, it is gorgeous.

Again, there is no other place to drink in town. Sure there are some bars and a few little roadside places, but nothing this cool, this tasteful, this well run or so deserving of business.

Pitak and Aeh are two of the best people ever and the staff are always having fun and it's a family.

Couldn't meet a nicer bunch of people

Where else can you listen to the most famous bass player in Thailand play pink floyd songs to obese germans!

Bangkok and ADEX and the Happy Snapper

So Karin and I headed off to Bangkok to sell ourselves.
Well, we tried to sell our new website...well actually we tried to get boats to use our website to sell themselves. Convoluted?

Yep.
But check out www.liveaboardguide.com
and see what we are up to. Seems pretty good so far...
But before we left...we had a night out with Keith. Here's us with the lovely hostess with way more than the mostess - Aeh, the boss lady of Happy Snapper - the best live music joint this side of Phang-Nga.

She gave Each of us a tshirt. Of course they are a gaudy yellow, but that's the kings colors and we are supposed to wear yellow shirts on Mondays to celebrate his 60 years of ruling Thailand.

There are no actual pictures of us at ADEX, as I was busy running around trying to get people to sign up for our site. And looking for important people to leech free drinks off of. And free snacks. And finding computer geeks to...well geek out with.

Instead you will find this picture of Karin buying an old (looking) poster at a sort of fake antique shop in the middle of Chatuchak weekend market. This is one of the largest markets in the world with thousands and thousands of stalls. Hotter than a camels left nut in there too! But man is it cool to wander around. And of course, everyone's favorite....MBK. 7 floors of stalls with a massive amount of things. One entire floor is just mobile phones and accessories. I mean this is where phones geeks go to talk super phone geek talk and there are bidding wars on the best phone numbers. It was also the scene of a fire about one week ago. Interesting to think about how anyone could possibly escape from this place on a normal day, let alone a fire. But there are cheap DVD's so....

So check out our websites.....

Khao Lak New Years day after...Happy Snapper

So after a bit of a snack (Su cooked a huge meal of Lobsters, shrimp, and several other marine life - perfect for a room full of divers, as most of us are veggies or at least don't eat fish!) I headed down the fabled Happy Snapper. The best Place in Khao Lak for a beer, music and atmosphere.

Here's Ali Talking rubbish. But since he has a flower in his hair it's all okay.

The weather today was sunny through the whole first part of the day and the aftrenoon was overcast. Finally got a bit a bit of rain at our normal 4:00....

But since I have full custody of Ba-ruce I took him to the beach and had a bit of a romp. This is Bang Niang Beach, just North of Mukdara resort. He's getting really good at pestering Germans on lounge chairs. I give him treats for sniffing old ladies butts. They squeal, I go over and ask them what they are doing to my dog and we walk away!

Again...keep checking back for exciting developments in the web world for Wicked Diving and our affiliates....Liveaboard Guide

March 31 - Khao Lak Weather

Khao Lak Weather

Again...nice weather. 33c (93) today. A bit muggy, so it's a definite day for diving or staying in A/C and napping.

I was home for lunch and found Ba-ruce standing in our pond! So he must be feeling a bit hot today.

The forecast seems to be for another good week of good clear weather, possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. There might be some storms after that.

The irony is that is during Songkram - the water festival! so It would be ironic for storms to pour in.

More later as Karin comes back from finisihing her Open water class today.

Tomorrow - Staff diving day! We're going out to the Similans with several of our Thai friends from Happy Snapper (the best live music bar in Phang Nga) who really helped make this area a community rather than some tourist trap. We'll be teaching some to dive, teaching some to swim! and also do some sweet fun dives just for ourselves!!!!
