Komodo Diving in Safety

Pub quiz - what is a nautilus?

If you answered a deep sea dwelling, prehistoric looking cephalopod, then you are right. However, Wicked Diving also recently discovered that it’s a very sophisticated piece of dive gear called the Nautilus Lifeline, when we took delivery of a batch of these two-way radios.

Not just another gadget, the Nautilus Lifeline is advanced technology for divers - a two-way handheld radio and GPS which enables you to communicate on the surface with your dive boat, other boats in the vicinity boats, or send a distress call using the lifeline function. The objective? To prevent lost divers.

The Nautilus Lifeline allows you to:
·         Call your dive boat with 2 may marine radio
·         Call any boat around you on a universal Hail and Distress on Channel 16
·         Send an automatic alert message with you GPS coordinates to all modern radios within an 18 km radius.

To strive for the safest possible diving for all our guests on our Komodo liveaboard trips, we are equipping each of our dive guides with a Nautilus Lifeline. We believe that this complements the safety measures already in place including constant surface support during dives, surface air horns for all guides and essential pre-dive current checks for each dive on our Komodo liveaboard. Diving in currents is a lot of fun, but should also be respected too.

Here’s a Diego testing out the Nautilus Lifeline on one of our recent day trips.
