MARINE LIFE

I've just come back from a great 3 days of diving in the Similans. Just to prove that you never know what you are going to see when you jump in...

We started our day off with a morning dive at Boulder City (7am baby!). There was no current, and probably 35 meters of visibility...just another day of diving here in the Similans. As we were all floating at 5 meters for our safety stop, Ricky started banging on his tank (louder than usual as he had a hood on and couldn't hear the noise he was making!) and pointing into the blue. There it was, what after much discussion and fish-book references we have determined to be a Smooth Tailed Mobula Ray. Just one of the amazing examples of the marine life we are surrounded by here in the Similan Islands.
Mobula is a genus of ray in the family Myliobatidae (eagle rays).[2] Their appearance is similar to that of Manta rays, which are in the same family. The Devil fish can attain a disc width of up to 5.2 meters (17 feet) and probably can weigh over a ton [3], second only to the Manta in size. Despite their size, this genus is quite little-known.
